Transfort News July 2025
Help Shape the Future of Transit in Fort Collins!

Transfort is exploring ways to improve bus service in Fort Collins. We’ve created three possible service ideas to show different options and trade-offs. The final plan will likely combine the best elements from each, shaped by community feedback and data.

Take a few minutes to review the options and provide feedback through a survey in English or in Spanish. Your input will help us design a transit system that’s more accessible, efficient and better meets the needs of Fort Collins.

MAX Guideway Safety

With 12 stations and stops, MAX follows a dedicated transit-only guideway and mixed-traffic streets, connecting the South Transit Center (STC) to Downtown. For the safety of bus passengers, pedestrians and cyclists, the guideway is for buses and authorized emergency or City vehicles only.

Why can’t I drive, walk or bike on the guideway?

The guideway is too narrow for other users to travel safely beside buses and other official vehicles. The Mason trail adjacent to MAX is a convenient option for cyclists and pedestrians.

Why does MAX stop when a train approaches?

Under an agreement with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF), MAX buses on the guideway are required to stop when a train passes. The railroad is concerned about safety on the guideway, which is within the railroad right-of-way. The railroad has between 4 to 8 trains running during MAX operating hours. There is no set schedule for when the trains travel through our community, which makes it difficult to anticipate their arrival. Passengers will experience delays when the bus is held at a station due to the train. In the Downtown area and on McClelland Street, the bus is not required to stop for trains.
