National Trails Day

National Trails Day Volunteer Event!

National Trails Day Event is on June 7th from 8:30 am- 12:30 pm. This year's project will be an opportunity for volunteers to pick from a variety of trail and maintenance projects. We have three main projects. Transportation from the Northside Aztlan Center is available. E-mail achlebnik@fcgov.com if you need transportation.

The three main projects are:

(1) Installing multiple resting pods along the paved Lindenmeier Overlook Trail. This project came from multiple requests via the disability community. The project will include building rock walls, installing firm/stable surface, and possibly installing benches. Volunteers on this project will be working directly off the paved trail, no more than 0.3 miles from the parking lot, and will have various tasks to choose from depending on ability level.

(2) General trail maintenance along single track hiking trails. Volunteers on this project should expect hiking up to 3 miles, with a hand tool, improving trail tread and drainage as they hike in a group with an experience Crew Leader.

(3) Staining picnic tables in the south parking lot pavilion. This project will include applying wood stain to pre-sanded picnic tables. Volunteers will be on the paved trail with restroom and shade available. *This project is designed to be accessible for those with a disability, particularly one that limits mobility.

Lunch, volunteer gifts, and a chance to win fabulous prizes will be available to those who stay for the duration of this event!

Here are some important things to know before signing up:
1) This event is for community members ages 12+ and no dogs are allowed at this event.
2) All participants must sign up through this link and will be prompted to sign a waiver (yay for less paper at the event!)
3) Meeting and sign-in location will be at the North parking lot of Soapstone Prairie Natural Area. Signage will be provided to direct participants. Additional driving directions will also be provided.
4) Registration will open at 8:30am with stewardship activity beginning around 9am.
4) Bring water and sun protection. Wear long pants and durable shoes. Gloves and any necessary tools will be provided.
5) More specifics will be provided after registration.

Volunteers will be given an important safety talk and split into groups before hitting the trail. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking at this area. E-mail AJ at achlebnik@fcgov.com if you require transportation and would like to reserve a seat on the bus.

Snacks and water jugs (for refills) will be provided. Please bring your own water container, warm/layered clothing, close-toed footwear adequate for a dirt path, and any other items for a morning of comfort outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Please reach out to AJ Chlebnik with any questions at (970)224-6118 or achlebnik@fcgov.com
