School's out - what now?

By Aaron Harris, Sr. Recreation Manager

“Holy cow, summer is only half over and my kids are getting restless. I need something to keep them occupied.” That’s what a friend told me recently – and if you’re in the same boat, I’ve got you covered. I put on my thinking cap and came up with a few ideas to keep the second half of summer fun, active and memorable for your family.

Sign up for School's Out Days

First, unless you were ahead of the game back in January, many of our Camp FunQuest sessions are already full. But remember: Registration for School's Out Days opens on August 7, so be ready! It’s a great opportunity to plan ahead for fall and winter breaks.

Explore parks across town

Next, I recommend getting out of your neighborhood and exploring a park in a different part of town. Sometimes a simple change of scenery is all it takes. A couple of my family’s favorite combos: Dovetail Park followed by a snack at Jessup Farm, or Sugar Beet Park paired with brunch in Old Town. And every year, when the water levels drop later in the summer, I take my kids to the Poudre River Whitewater Park for some splashing in the river – it’s always a hit.

Register for summer recreation programs

If you’re looking for something more structured, check out our new online registration system. It makes it easier than ever to filter by available programs and find the right fit for your family. And, there are still spots open in several unique classes this summer! “Pee Wee Farmers” lets preschool-aged kids explore what life on a farm is like. “Parent & Tot Handbuilding” is a fun way for kids and parents to get a little messy while creating pottery together. And if you’re feeling adventurous, sign up for the “Family Crag Climbing Day,” where families learn to rock climb together. You might even see me out there – one of my kids loves climbing, and I’m just trying to keep up!

Fort Collins is great place in the summer, and there is plenty of summer left. Whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure or a creative indoor activity, the Parks and Recreation Departments have something for every family!

Fall/Winter Recreator is almost here!

Mark your calendars! The Fall/Winter Recreator drops on July 21. Registration for most programs begins the first week of August.

As part of our efforts to support sustainable and responsible business practices, The Recreator is no longer mailed directly to households. You can still enjoy the same publication you know and love in a more eco-friendly, online format! Please note: Some print copies will be made available at select Recreation facilities.

Register for 2025-2026 Funtime Preschool

We still have spots available for our Fall 2025-Spring 2026 Funtime Preschool, Pre-K and Universal Pre-K programs! The Fort Collins Funtime Preschool Program is a quality-rated, state-licensed childcare program for children ages 3-5 years focused on the development of readiness skills through both child-directed discovery and teacher-led activities.
