This year, the City is commemorating the 58th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful.
Fair housing laws were enacted to provide equal housing opportunities. It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of a person's protected class in the sale, rental or financing of housing. Protected classes include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
Each year, the City celebrates Fair Housing month by honoring an organization that contributes to fair housing choice in our community through a Proclamation at City Council. On Tuesday, April 7, at 5:00pm, the Mayor read a Proclamation recognizing Colorado State University’s Off-Campus Life office as a valued partner in furthering fair housing. Off-Campus Life provides housing education and advocacy for CSU students, and housing resources to the public. Since the ‘80s, they have provided resources to renters and outreach to populations who experience barriers to housing. We recognize Off-Campus Life as a valuable member of the community’s housing-support system that increases housing opportunity in Fort Collins.
