New Fish Habitat Structures at Dixon Reservoir

You may have noticed that Dixon Reservoir water levels, at Pineridge Natural Area, were lower than normal recently. The reservoir was drawn down by the City of Fort Collins Parks Department for repairs to the reservoir’s dam. This provided a unique opportunity for Natural Areas to improve fish habitat in the exposed bottom of the reservoir.

Natural Areas partnered with the Parks Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Rocky Mountain Flycasters to build over two dozen fish habitat structures adjacent to the northwest shoreline. The structures will help provide sportfish with much needed habitat, while congregating them to enhance the fishing experience. The reservoir is currently full again, so fish on!

Play It Safe on the Poudre River

Poudre River conditions are fast, cold, and dangerous! High flows are unsafe. The river is not the same as a lazy river, especially between the months of May and late June. Wait to recreate if you do not have expert skills and appropriate equipment.

When flows are low or anytime you enter the water, follow these tips to play it safe on the Poudre River:

  • Wear a life vest, shoes, and a helmet.
  • Know conditions, including weather, water temperature, and flow rates.
  • Plan your take-out location before you get in and pay attention to all warning signs.
  • Write your name and number on your vessel in case you become separated.
  • Avoid logs, branches, rocks, debris and low-head dams. They can drag you under.
  • Never tie tubes, gear, or yourself together.
  • Float sober, float safe.
  • If you end up in the water, don't stand. Avoid foot entrapment and use your arms to paddle to shore.
  • Keep a waterproof phone nearby and call 911 in an emergency.
  • If someone needs help, reach out or throw a rope. Don't enter the water yourself.
