Service Area has a new name - Community Development, Housing and Sustainability

While maintaining our triple bottom line philosophy of people, planet and profit, the Sustainability Service Area at the City will now be called Community Development, Housing and Sustainability Service Area.  The Planning and Development Services departments will join Economic Health, Environmental Services and Housing & Community Vitality to be under one service area umbrella. We expect this change to add efficiency and allow us to provide better customer service.

Don't Be Fooled by Our Dry Climate - Heavy Storms Cause Flooding

Spring and summer in Colorado can bring intense thunderstorms, snow melt and flooding. While Fort Collins has seen little flooding in recent years, it can strike at any time. We have two primary flood threats in Fort Collins: flash flooding due to quick-developing thunderstorms and flooding on the Poudre River caused by snowmelt and extended periods of heavy rain.  For more information, visit the link below, call 970-416-2632 or V/TDD 711.

Know the flood risk where you live, work, and play:  Visit FCMaps - Floodplains and search by address. The floodplain map includes FEMA-and City-designated floodplains.

Protection Tips and Resources:

·         We can’t warn you if we can’t reach you. Sign up for NOCO Alert.

·         Only flood insurance covers floods. Fort Collins residents get up to a 40% discount on flood insurance. Call your insurance broker.

·         Be Red Cross Ready: Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed.

·         Don’t enter, drive, walk or bike through floodwater.

·         Play it safe on the Poudre River.

·         Find flood resources before a flood happens.

More Information

Thanks to the Department of Local Affairs!

Fort Collins was declared a Certified Transit-Oriented Community by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, which allows for projects in our jurisdiction to apply for grants for Housing in rich transit areas. The City was awarded an infrastructure grant for Volunteers of America’s Switchgrass Crossing, a new 45-unit, 55+ older adult community that is under construction at 3800 S. Mason Street. This project transforms a parking lot for cars into homes for people. DOLA also awarded the City a grant to support the creation of a Housing Action Plan to guide programs and funding in the next 3 years. The State of Colorado is a valued partner in local housing work.

Community Climate Leadership Fund

The City of Fort Collins Environmental Services Department is excited to announce a new Community Climate Leadership Fund designed to support community projects focused on climate action and waste reduction. We are looking for projects of up to $20,000 (although higher amounts could also be considered).

Start imagining what your project could look like — a neighborhood composting initiative, expanded community energy-efficiency programs at your nonprofit, or another idea that supports a more sustainable future.

Whether you are a group of neighbors, an HOA, a school, an organization, an individual, or another type of community group, we encourage you to consider applying.

We are hosting an open house where community members can learn more about the opportunity and brainstorm ideas with us (no registration required):

  • Monday, July 13 (4:30–6:30 p.m.) – Museum of Discovery

Email ourclimatefuture@fortcollins.gov with any questions or if you would like to receive updates about the program.

Affordable Housing Board Corner

City Housing Funding Awards

The City had $3,231,467 available in the Spring Competitive Process funding for Housing and Homelessness Public Facilities. These funds will support:

·         Preservation and renovation of 156 existing affordable housing apartments,

·         Homeowners via the VOA Handyman program,

·         Preservation of permanent supportive housing by reducing debt, and

·         The acquisition of a building to provide shelter to families experiencing homelessness.

This annual process provides financial support from the City toward addressing the housing needs of low- and moderate-income residents in our community. The City had more eligible projects apply than available funding. Both the Affordable Housing Board and the Human Services and Housing Funding Board thought all applications would have been funded if more funds were available.

The next affordable housing meeting will take place on August 6, 2026 from 4-6 PM at 222 Laporte Avenue in the Colorado River Conference Room.
