The Timber Trail in Pineridge Natural Area is entering Phase 2 of its maintenance project to improve safety, sustainability and access for all users, with work planned late September through mid-October 2026. The trail will remain open throughout construction.
During Phase 1, Natural Areas staff, with help from dedicated volunteers, rebuilt three boardwalks, installed 50 drainage features, completed two minor trail alignments and improved 2,400ft of trail tread. Phase 2 will focus on a major realignment of the northern portion of the Timber Trail and will include 2,760ft of new trail tread, restoration of 1,390ft of degraded trail, additional tread and rock work, and restoration and revegetation of old trail segments.
The new alignment will improve trail connectivity, allowing users of all types to connect back to the Dixon Reservoir Loop trail and providing hikers with direct access to the upper parking area at Pineridge Natural Area, helping maintain a consistent trail experience while integrating progressive technical trail features to support a diverse range of ability levels.
The project has included coordination with trail user groups and staff review of cultural resources, wildlife and botany to balance recreation needs with long-term trail sustainability.
