Not Native
One of the toughest red oaks for Fort Collins. Smaller than Shumard oak but often very hard to differentiate. Has good red-orange fall color and generally whiter bark than other red oaks. Does not seem to have the same frost cracking issues as Shumard oak but does not snow load as well. Can be confused with scarlet oak or northern red oak in the trade which accounts for the trees that look chlorotic around Fort Collins. Tolerant of high pH soils. Not predictably cold hardy.
