This species is wind pollinated and is an important larval host plant for native butterflies.


Flora of North America lists four subspecies of A. tridentata, all are native to the western U.S. Three of the subspecies listed in this database are native to Colorado. This species is usually shorter than forty inches, has an irregular shaped crown and a spicy odor when crushed.
