Fort Collins
This plant has low salinity tolerance and moderate acidity tolerance. Flora of North America recognizes two varieties of C. stipata, both native to the U.S. This variety is native to the Fort Collins area and most of the U.S. Carex spitata var. maxima is native to the eastern portion of the U.S. The two varieties vary slightly in appearance, primarily in the width of their leaves and the size of their fruit.
This is an important larval food host for many of our native invertebrates.
