Flora of North America recognizes two varieties of C. imbricata, both native to the U.S. This variety is native to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Mexico. Variety argentea is native to Texas. Plant in an area where this plant can spread without coming in contact with people and animals.
