USDA Plants National Database recognizes three varieties of P. barbatus, all native to the southwestern portion of the U.S. Variety barbatus is native to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Variety torreyi and trichander are both native to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. This species can be found in the southwestern counties of Colorado.
Short-lived in the garden. Allow plant to seed and move from place to place in the garden. Great for hummingbirds.
