USDA Plants National Database recognizes three varieties of P. barbatus, all native to the southwestern portion of the U.S. Variety barbatus is native to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Variety torreyi and trichander are both native to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.
