USDA Plants National Database recognizes three subspecies of P. barbatus, all native to the southwestern portion of the U.S. Subspecies barbatus is native to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Subspecies torreyi and trichander are both native to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Subspecies trichander is also native to Texas. This species can be found in the southwestern and southcentral counties in Colorado.
Short-lived in the garden. Allow plant to seed and move from place to place in the garden. Great for hummingbirds.
